The ILU Knitwear Care Guide gives you some tips on how to extend the lifespan of your knits. Learning how to care for your pieces will ensure they can be worn on repeat for years to come.

Washing:

Most importantly, don’t wash your knits too much. Contrary to what your Mum might say, the same advice goes for almost every piece of clothing, but especially for knitwear. Overwashing can cause damage, so now is the time to actually read that care label on the inside of your sweater, and wash as directed.

Our knitwear should be cold washed by hand, or on a cool, gentle machine cycle with similar colours. Use a gentle detergent — here at ILU we recommend The Dirt Company. Be sure to avoid any harsh chemicals or stain removers which could affect the colour.

Drying:

Once hand washed, let the garment soak for 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. To absorb the excess water, place your knit on a clean towel and press. Gently pull to shape and dry on a flat surface. Do not wring, and definitely don’t put it in the dryer, otherwise it’ll end up a few sizes too small...

Storage:

Once you have a clean and dry knit, avoid hanging them in your cupboard. This can cause the shape and fit to stretch, and it’s really hard to get this back to its original shape. Instead, try storing your knits folded in a dark and cool drawer or shelf.

Care:

Pilling of knitwear is a natural reaction that occurs when the knit fibres rub during wear. When this happens, it’s time to invest in a lint roller and de-pilling device such as a wool comb, but don’t worry, they are really easy to use. Gently brush them over the areas on your knitwear that see the most friction, such as the cuffs, hems and along the sleeves.

If a snag happens, try not to cut or pull at the loosened thread, but feed it back through the hole and tie a knot at the end of the thread on the inside of the garment.
