Fern Ngatai is a tā moko artist and visual artist from Tāmaki Makaurau, raised on the whenua of Te Kawerau ā Maki. Her work is rooted in connection, culture, movement, and storytelling, often created on harakeke paper to honour memory, material, and identity. Each piece invites you to slow down and feel the story through form and line.
Fern has been a long time supporter and customer of I Love Ugly. This collaboration creates space for her voice, story and artistry. All proceeds from this artwork go directly to the artist.

Introducing Ara Matua, a work that speaks to the main road of life and the journeys we take to find it. Ara Matua reminds us that whether you feel you are on the right track or moving through detours, you are still on your path. The journey is rarely straightforward, and every turn holds purpose.

The hae hae designs along the sides represent the turns and U-turns we make as humans in order to return “on track” or reconnect with the main road. These detours are not distractions, but essential parts of the journey itself. The pou (pathway) at the centre acts as a guide—steady, consistent, and grounding—offering direction no matter which way life unfolds. This piece invites acceptance of all paths taken, honouring life as it is.
